Meta Updates Smart Glasses to Strengthen Recording Indicator Protection

Meta has introduced a new update for its smart glasses aimed at reinforcing one of the device's key privacy safeguards: the capture LED. The company says the glasses will now disable the camera if the indicator light is detected as tampered with or destroyed.

The move comes after users found ways to bypass the light, which is designed to show when recording is active. Meta's glasses include a built-in camera in the frame, making the LED an important signal for people nearby. The company also notes that the shutter sound remains audible only to the wearer.

In its latest FAQ-style guidance, Meta said photos and videos captured on the glasses are visible only to the user unless they choose to share them. The company is also taking steps against businesses that advertise services to disable the light, including removing related promotions from its platforms and pursuing legal action where needed.

The update highlights how wearable technology is evolving alongside new expectations for transparency and responsible design. As smart glasses become more common, privacy-focused features are likely to shape the next generation of everyday devices.
