Meta has announced that it is currently testing a standalone application for its Vibes feature, as confirmed in a statement to TechCrunch. Initially launched in September, Vibes allows users to create and share short AI-generated videos while providing a feed that showcases similar content from other users.
Unlike platforms such as TikTok or Instagram Reels, Vibes exclusively features AI-generated videos. Previously, this content was accessible only through the Meta AI app. By introducing Vibes as a standalone app, Meta aims to enhance its competitiveness against OpenAI's Sora, which debuted shortly after Vibes.
In their statement, Meta highlighted, "Following the strong early traction of Vibes within Meta AI, we are testing a standalone app to build on that momentum. Users are increasingly engaging with the format to create, discover, and share AI-generated videos with friends. This app will offer a dedicated space for that experience, providing a more immersive environment. We will continue to expand the app based on community feedback."
The news was initially reported by Platformer. While Meta has not disclosed specific usage statistics, the company asserts that Vibes has been performing well, with a steady increase in Meta AI usage since its inception, indicating a demand for a dedicated application.
Meta emphasizes that a standalone app will enhance user engagement and creation experiences. Vibes enables users to create videos from scratch or remix existing ones. Before sharing, users can add visuals, incorporate music, and modify styles. Videos can be posted directly to the Vibes feed, sent via direct message, or shared on Instagram and Facebook Stories and Reels.
Collaboration and sharing among users are reportedly on the rise, with many Vibes videos being sent to friends, reflecting similar behaviors seen with Reels.
Additionally, Meta recently indicated that it would explore premium subscription options for AI features, including Vibes. Although Vibes has been free since its launch, Meta plans to introduce a freemium model, allowing users to subscribe for enhanced video creation features in the coming months.
