In a significant move to bolster its AI infrastructure, Meta has entered into a partnership with Reliance Industries, marking its inaugural AI data center venture in India. This collaboration aims to establish a 168-megawatt AI-enabled data center located in Jamnagar, Gujarat, as part of a broader strategy to tap into India's burgeoning AI ecosystem.
The announcement, made on Wednesday, highlights an evolving relationship that began with Meta's substantial investment in Reliance's Jio Platforms. This partnership has now transitioned into a joint venture worth $100 million, focused on developing enterprise AI solutions for both local and international markets.
India is quickly becoming a prime destination for AI infrastructure, with major tech players seeking to expand their data center capabilities in response to the increasing demand for computational power. Companies such as Microsoft, Amazon, Google, and OpenAI have also made significant investments in the country, contributing to its rapid growth in data center operations.
Beyond global tech firms, domestic players are also stepping up. Blackstone-backed AirTrunk has recently announced plans to invest $30 billion in building 5 gigawatts of data center capacity in India by 2030. Additionally, Indian conglomerates like Adani and Tata Consultancy Services are unveiling their ambitious expansion plans to accommodate the rising AI workloads.
The Indian government has been proactive in attracting such investments by offering policy incentives, including tax exemptions for foreign cloud providers through 2047, provided their operations are based in Indian data centers.
According to government data, India's data center capacity has surged from approximately 375 megawatts in 2020 to an estimated 1.5 gigawatts by 2025. Projections suggest this figure could exceed 8 gigawatts by the end of the decade, driven by an increase in cloud adoption and local data processing needs.
The Meta-Reliance agreement underscores a growing partnership that began with Meta's $5.7 billion investment in Jio Platforms in 2020. Since then, both companies have expanded their collaboration across various digital services and enterprise AI sectors.
As part of this new partnership, Meta will lease capacity at Reliance's Jamnagar facility, which will be powered by renewable energy and cooled using desalinated seawater. Meta has committed to covering the full costs associated with energy and water for its operations.
Reliance anticipates that the data center will be operational within two years, with the potential for future expansions. This facility will not only support Meta's global infrastructure but also integrate India into its worldwide network of AI facilities.
Under the terms of the agreement, Reliance will provide comprehensive services, from design and construction to renewable energy solutions and ongoing operations, positioning itself as a key player in the AI infrastructure landscape.
Meta has also secured nearly 1 gigawatt of new renewable energy capacity in India through partnerships with CleanMax and Fourth Partner Energy, further supporting the Jamnagar facility's energy needs.
