Meta Expands Teen Safety Alerts for AI Chatbot Conversations

Meta is expanding teen safety tools for Meta AI, adding parent alerts, human review, and stronger protections for sensitive chatbot conversations.

Meta Expands Teen Safety Alerts for AI Chatbot Conversations

Meta is introducing a new safety layer for its Meta AI chatbot, notifying parents when a teenager makes a clear reference to suicide or self-harm during a conversation. The company says flagged chats will be manually reviewed before any alert is sent, adding a human check to its automated detection system.

According to Meta, if a teen's intent is unclear, the platform will take the cautious route and inform parents. The company describes this as an early step in improving how AI systems respond to sensitive conversations, especially for younger users.

The feature is now available to parents using Instagram's Parental Supervision tools in the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada. Meta plans a broader global rollout by the end of the year.

The update builds on existing Instagram protections that alert parents when teens repeatedly search for suicide or self-harm terms, and on tools that let parents review the topics their child discussed with Meta AI over the previous week. Meta is also extending its Limited Content setting to Meta AI, making the chatbot refuse a wider range of teen prompts.

In addition, Meta says it may contact emergency services if a conversation with Meta AI suggests that a person, adult or teen, could be at risk of suicide. The move aligns chatbot safeguards with the protections already used across Facebook and Instagram.

As AI companions become more common, these safety features may help shape a future where digital tools are designed with stronger family oversight and more responsible interaction standards.
