Menlo Ventures' AI Bet on Anthropic Powers Its $3 Billion Fundraise

Menlo Ventures raises a record $3 billion fund after its early Anthropic bet pays off, strengthening its position in the fast-moving AI investment landscape.

Menlo Ventures has secured $3 billion in new capital, marking the largest fundraise in its five-decade history. The firm's momentum is closely tied to its AI strategy, with Anthropic emerging as the centerpiece of that success.

The venture capital firm's stake in Anthropic is now estimated at roughly $14 billion, reflecting how early conviction in generative AI has translated into major portfolio value. Menlo made a bold $750 million commitment to the company in 2024, helping lead Anthropic's Series D round before the startup's breakout acceleration.

That move came at a time when the broader venture market was still recovering, making the scale of the investment structure especially notable. Menlo used a special purpose vehicle to gather most of the capital, combining outside participation with its own fund and insider backing.

Since then, the firm has expanded its AI footprint further, including follow-on investments in Anthropic and the launch of a startup fund built with the company. That initiative, later known as Anthology, has supported dozens of young companies and helped Menlo deepen its role in the AI ecosystem.

Menlo's portfolio now spans a wider range of AI-focused startups, reinforcing its position as one of the sector's most active backers. The latest fund gives the firm more room to shape the next wave of intelligent software, infrastructure, and applied AI. The result may help define how venture capital fuels the next generation of technology.
