Melissa Chiu, the esteemed director of the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C., is set to take the helm at the Guggenheim Museum in New York. Her new role will commence on September 1, marking a significant transition in her career and the latest in a series of changes within the Smithsonian institution.
Chiu will report to Mariët Westermann, the director and CEO of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, which oversees a global network of Guggenheim museums, including the anticipated Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, which is nearing its opening. Chiu's appointment follows the departure of Richard Armstrong, who held leadership roles at both the Guggenheim Foundation and the New York museum for 15 years.
Since taking the lead at the Hirshhorn in 2014, Chiu has been recognized for her innovative approach to curating exhibitions, showcasing prominent artists like Yayoi Kusama. Her 2017 exhibition, "Infinity Mirror Rooms," attracted an impressive 160,000 visitors, solidifying her reputation for engaging diverse audiences. Before her tenure at the Hirshhorn, Chiu was instrumental in founding the 4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art and served as a curator for the Asia Society in New York, focusing on contemporary Asian and Asian American art.
