Meg Webster Collaborates with Comme des Garçons and DIA Art Foundation to Launch Unique Perfume

Meg Webster teams up with Comme des Garçons and DIA Art Foundation to launch a unique, nature-inspired perfume, blending art with olfactory experience.

Renowned artist Meg Webster is set to enchant the senses with her first signature perfume, a collaborative effort with the DIA Art Foundation and the iconic fashion label Comme des Garçons. Launching on March 19, this fragrance captures the essence of Webster's earth-inspired sculptures, which are crafted from natural materials such as soil, sand, and salt. The DIA Art Foundation, a long-standing supporter of Webster's work, describes her creations as immersive experiences that invite viewers to engage with their surroundings.

The perfume is designed to evoke the refreshing scent of nature, reminiscent of rain-soaked earth and the tranquility of a forest. According to an initial sample shared with ARTnews, this gender-neutral fragrance features a woodsy aroma, gradually revealing a hint of musk, akin to the subtle crunch of a twig underfoot. It is elegantly packaged in a polished silver tetrahedral box, a design element that reflects Webster's artistic aesthetic.

Webster explains her artistic philosophy, stating, "I create sculptural works using natural materials, shaped into fundamental geometric forms that are meant to be experienced by the body. The process of creation should be evident." The collaboration with DIA aims to encapsulate the purity of nature in a fragrance that embodies the essence of a spring rain or a stroll through a dense forest.

Comme des Garçons, founded by Rei Kawakubo in 1969, is celebrated for its innovative and architectural designs, often merging fashion with art and culture. The brand has previously ventured into the world of fragrances, collaborating with various artists and institutions to create unique scents that challenge traditional olfactory experiences. Notable past collaborations include perfumes created with the Serpentine Galleries and composer Max Richter, each evoking distinct sensory landscapes.

To celebrate this partnership, Comme des Garçons has also showcased a piece by Webster at their West 22nd Street store in Manhattan, directly across from DIA's Chelsea location. Titled Copper Containing Salt II (2017), this artwork features a single sheet of copper shaped into a cylinder, filled with coarse rock salt, symbolizing the harmony between natural materials. This installation reinforces the thematic connections between Webster's visual art and her new fragrance, creating a dialogue that transcends traditional boundaries of art and olfactory experience.

As the worlds of art and scent converge through this collaboration, it opens up exciting possibilities for future creative endeavors, inviting consumers to experience art in a whole new way.
