Maurizio Cattelan to Kick Off Milan Design Week with Dawn 'Breakfast-Barter' in Piazza Duomo

Maurizio Cattelan is set to launch the Milan Design Week on April 20 at 7 a.m. with an innovative public event titled "breakfast-barter" in the iconic Piazza Duomo. This unique gathering aims to blend art and community interaction through an engaging experiment in amateur economics.

The concept is straightforward: participants are encouraged to bring an item that is "curious, iconic, affective, eccentric or unexpected" to trade with others before enjoying their espresso. Lavazza will provide the coffee, which, unlike the items exchanged, is not available for trade.

Co-organized with Nicolas Ballario, this event will feature notable designers such as Stefano Seletti, Fabio Novembre, Marcantonio, Charley Vezza, and Giulio Iacchetti. Together, they will transform one of the city's most photographed squares into a vibrant swap meet, enhanced by stylish participants and captivating lighting. This follows last year's successful dawn breakfast, indicating Cattelan's penchant for early-morning events that merge performance art with lifestyle experiences.

The underlying purpose of this gathering remains ambiguous--whether it's to explore the value of objects, the significance of experiences, or simply to witness the enthusiasm of attendees trading items like a ceramic ashtray for a tote bag under the guidance of a contemporary art provocateur.
