Among these modern visionaries is Liza Lou, who takes the concept of brushstrokes to a new dimension through her unique use of beads. Known for her intricate installations, including the renowned piece titled "Kitchen," which took five years to complete, Lou now incorporates thousands of colorful beads into her oil paintings. This technique pays homage to the legacy of Abstract Expressionism while exploring the relationship between gesture and intention.
Currently, Lou's work is featured in her solo exhibition titled FAQ at Thaddaeus Ropac in London. The exhibition title reflects the recurring inquiries that shape her artistic practice, such as the transformation of a painting into something beyond itself. Lou articulates, "These works are about amplification--about making things more ideal." She draws inspiration from a poem by Fernando Pessoa, expressing a desire for flowers to embody their essence fully, paralleling her goal of making paint transcend its traditional role.
In Lou's paintings, each bead is meticulously positioned, creating a vibrant topography that invites viewers to experience the work from multiple perspectives. While the beads mimic the spontaneity of paint applied directly from the tube, they cannot be blended on the canvas. Instead, Lou relies on the interplay of colors and textures, crafting an illusion of blended strokes and splatters that, upon closer inspection, reveal a rich, sculptural quality.
Lou describes her creative process as an improvisational journey, where each stroke demands her complete focus, resulting in moments of intense realization. "Every mark becomes this kind of violin-crescendo-holy shit-experience," she notes, emphasizing the emotional depth behind her meticulous work.
The FAQ exhibition opens on April 10 and runs until May 23, showcasing Lou's innovative approach to mixed media and inviting audiences to reconsider the boundaries of painting.
