Light, the startup known for its minimalist phone philosophy, is taking a fresh turn with a new flip phone designed to appeal to users who want fewer distractions without giving up modern essentials. Co-founder Kaiwei Tang, who helped shape the Motorola Razr more than two decades ago, says the company noticed a clear pattern among younger users: many enjoy flip phones, but want better build quality and a more refined experience.
That insight led Light to build the Light Flip, a device that carries the company's familiar software approach into a tactile format. The phone uses the same Light Phone OS and developer tools found in the brand's recent devices, while keeping core functions such as alarms, calendar, calculator and other practical utilities.
One of the biggest shifts is price. Light says the Flip will be its most affordable model yet at $299, far below the $799 Light Phone III. To reach that level, the company removed features such as a touchscreen, NFC and a selfie camera, and switched to a plastic body. In return, users get a colorful lineup that includes black, red, yellow, pink, navy blue and light grey.
The device features a 2.8-inch OLED inner display, no outer screen, a small front light for notifications, 5G and 4G LTE support, USB-C charging, Bluetooth and headphone-jack audio, eSIM and Nano SIM compatibility, plus a 12-megapixel rear camera. Light says it can also handle podcasts and uploaded music.
Light expects the phone to begin shipping in April 2027. To help future buyers adjust, the company is launching a community program called Flip Your Life, including bi-weekly newsletters focused on the shift toward a less smartphone-centered routine. With this launch, Light is positioning the Flip as both a product and a lifestyle choice, pointing toward a future where technology feels more intentional, colorful and human-centered.
