Kyoto Fusioneering has taken a major step in the fusion ecosystem by starting work on Unity-3, a prototype fuel breeding device developed with Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The project is supported by grants from the U.S. Department of Energy and the state of Tennessee.

The Japan-based company, already recognized as a specialized supplier in the fusion supply chain, is also relocating its U.S. headquarters to Oak Ridge. The move places the startup closer to one of the most important research hubs in advanced energy development.

Unity-3 is designed to test a core fuel cycle technology known as a breeding blanket. In fusion systems, this component captures energy from the reactor while helping produce fresh fuel for continued operation. One approach uses liquid lithium, which absorbs heat and neutrons and can generate tritium, a key isotope for many reactor concepts.

Beyond this device, Kyoto Fusioneering is building technologies that support the wider fusion process, including systems for heating fuel into plasma, recycling unused fuel, and converting heat into electricity. The company says Unity-3 will help validate experimental data that has so far relied heavily on computer modeling.

As more fusion startups look to external suppliers for fuel-cycle solutions, Kyoto Fusioneering is positioning itself as a central partner in the industry's next phase. If the results prove scalable, the work could help accelerate the path from laboratory progress to grid-ready fusion power, shaping a more efficient energy future.
