Kyiv Considers Replacing Former Lenin Pedestal with Mazepa Monument

Kyiv may soon see a new chapter in its urban landscape as a pedestal once occupied by a Lenin statue is being considered for a monument to Ivan Mazepa, the Cossack leader widely honored in Ukraine.

The site, located at a major intersection in the capital, held a 12-foot red quartzite Lenin sculpture for nearly six decades before it was removed during the Euromaidan period. Since then, the base has remained empty, becoming a symbol of a city redefining its public spaces.

During a Constitution Day address at the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy suggested that Mazepa deserves a full monument in Kyiv. He made the proposal while unveiling a smaller bust of Mazepa at the monastery complex, where the historic figure once supported cultural and religious life.

Mazepa, who led the Cossack state from 1687 to 1709, remains an important figure in Ukraine's historical memory. The idea of placing his monument at a prominent city location reflects a broader effort to connect public art with national heritage.

If realized, the project could further reshape Kyiv's civic identity and inspire future monuments that link history, culture, and modern urban design.
