Koyo Kouoh's Vision Lives On at the Venice Biennale

The upcoming 2026 Venice Biennale is set to witness a poignant tribute to the late curator Koyo Kouoh, who passed away last May. Despite her absence, the exhibition titled "In Minor Keys" will open on May 9, a realization of her vision, crafted by the team she meticulously assembled.

Her husband, Philippe Mall, initially feared the event would be canceled following her death, but Biennale president Pietrangelo Buttafuoco reached out to Mall and Kouoh's son, Djibril Schmed, encouraging them to proceed with the exhibition. Schmed expressed the importance of continuing the project, stating that Kouoh had been dedicated to her work even in her final days. "She wanted to get the job done," he recalled.

In other news, a Chicago judge has sentenced Robert Dunlap to 23 years in prison for orchestrating a cryptocurrency scam falsely claiming to be backed by renowned artworks. Operating from 2018 to 2023, Dunlap's venture, the "Meta-1 Coin Trust," misled nearly 1,000 investors, resulting in over $20 million in losses.

Meanwhile, an 1884 painting by Pierre-Auguste Renoir, known as The Cherry Hat, is returning to Spain thanks to a private buyer who emphasized its historical significance. This painting once belonged to the Spanish Duchess of Alba and marks a significant cultural repatriation.

Additionally, the Belarus Free Theatre is preparing for a collateral event at the Biennale, titled "Official. Unofficial. Belarus." The initiative aims to showcase the voice of unofficial culture, often overshadowed by national narratives, according to curator Daniella Kaliada.

In a fascinating blend of technology and art, a new robot named R1 has been introduced as a docent at the historic Palazzo Madama in Turin, enhancing the visitor experience through innovative engagement.

As the Venice Biennale approaches, the continuation of Kouoh's vision alongside these diverse cultural initiatives highlights the enduring power of art to inspire and connect communities across the globe.
