Kofi Ampadu, a prominent partner at a16z and leader of the Talent x Opportunity (TxO) program, has officially left the firm, as revealed in an email to staff that was accessed by TechCrunch. This decision comes in the wake of the firm's recent suspension of the TxO initiative and significant staff layoffs.
In his farewell message, Ampadu expressed his gratitude for the chance to lead the program, stating, "Identifying out-of-network entrepreneurs and supporting them as they sharpened their ideas, raised capital, and grew into confident leaders was one of the most meaningful experiences of my career."
Having taken the reins in 2020, Ampadu successfully guided the TxO program for over four years before its suspension last November. He succeeded Nait Jones, the program's initial leader, and subsequently contributed to a16z's latest accelerator, Speedrun.
The end of Ampadu's tenure may indicate a significant shift for the TxO program, which aimed to empower underserved founders by facilitating access to technology networks and investment capital. Despite receiving praise from some participants, the program faced criticism regarding its donor-advised fund structure. In 2024, TxO also initiated a grant program aimed at providing $50,000 to nonprofits that support diverse founders.
The final cohort of the TxO program took place in March 2025, and its indefinite pause aligns with a broader trend among leading tech companies reevaluating their commitments to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Both a16z and Ampadu have been approached for further comments.
"I moved to the United States three months before my 11th birthday..." Ampadu reflected on his experiences and the systemic challenges that inspired the creation of the Talent x Opportunity Initiative. He emphasized the importance of recognizing and supporting exceptional founders who may not fit traditional molds.
As he embarks on his next journey, Ampadu leaves with pride in the accomplishments of the TxO program and appreciation for those who contributed to its mission. "There is more work to do, and I am excited to keep building," he concluded.
