Kīlauea lit up Hawaiʻi's night sky on July 28 with a dramatic lava fountain that rose about 500 feet above Halemaʻumaʻu crater, marking the 52nd episode of its ongoing summit eruption.

The burst began at 7:10 p.m. HST and ended at 2:36 a.m. the next day, releasing an estimated 4.7 million cubic metres of lava over 7.4 hours. The flow stayed inside a closed area of Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, with no homes affected.

A Volcano in Pulsing Motion

Scientists describe the activity as a sequence of episodes rather than separate eruptions. Since December 2024, magma has repeatedly risen into vents inside Halemaʻumaʻu, paused, and then surged again as pressure rebuilt below the summit.

During the latest episode, the north vent drove the main fountain while the south vent remained mostly quiet. Around 9 p.m., lava reached its highest point, and the eruption column climbed to roughly 19,000 feet above sea level. The average lava output across the event was about 190 cubic metres per second.

By the end of the episode, fresh lava had covered nearly half of the crater floor. The pattern of ground inflation, tremor, and vent glow helped observatories anticipate the timing of the next burst, even though the exact start remained uncertain.

Science, Landscape, and Cultural Meaning

Kīlauea's activity is shaped by the Hawaiian hotspot deep below the island, but the stop-and-start rhythm comes from shallower magma storage near the summit. That makes the volcano both highly active and closely monitored.

The eruption remained within the crater, yet it still produced volcanic gas, ash, and fine glass threads known as Pele's hair. Visitors watched from designated overlooks as the moon and lava illuminated the caldera, turning the event into a rare blend of science and natural spectacle.

For many Native Hawaiians, the summit is also a sacred cultural landscape connected to Pelehonuamea and Halemaʻumaʻu. As monitoring continues, Kīlauea offers a vivid reminder of how Earth's most dynamic systems can shape both knowledge and future preparedness.
