The Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) has announced an exciting exhibition featuring a selection of works by the iconic artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, curated by PAMM director Franklin Sirmans and collection curator Megan Kincaid. This showcase, titled "Basquiat: Figures, Signs, Symbols," will include nine paintings and one sculpture, emphasizing Basquiat's exploration of themes like portraiture, language, and the vibrant interplay of color and form.
Opening on June 25, the exhibition will prominently feature Untitled (1982), which achieved a staggering auction record of $110.5 million at Sotheby's in May 2017. Interestingly, this piece was initially purchased by Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa before being acquired by Kenneth C. Griffin in 2024 for an impressive $200 million.
Sirmans expressed the significance of this exhibition, stating, "At PAMM, this exhibition feels both inevitable and vital. Miami's layered histories and diasporic communities create a context where Basquiat's visual language can be experienced with particular depth." The exhibition aims to encourage visitors to engage with Basquiat's work not merely as a market phenomenon but as a profound artistic expression.
Among the other notable works included are Untitled (Tenant) (1982), Pez Dispenser (1984), and In Italian (1983), each offering unique insights into Basquiat's artistic journey. The exhibition is strategically timed to coincide with the upcoming FIFA World Cup, which will see Miami hosting several matches, potentially increasing foot traffic to the museum.
