Joe Macken's 21-Year Journey to Create a Stunning Model of New York City

For over two decades, Joe Macken, a resident of Queens, dedicated himself to the extraordinary task of constructing a detailed model of New York City. This ambitious project, titled He Built This City: Joe Macken's Model, is currently showcased at the Museum of the City of New York.

Beginning in 2004, Macken started his 50-by-27-foot model in Middle Village, Queens, before relocating to Clifton Park, New York. The impressive creation features 340 distinct sections, crafted from common materials such as cardboard and glue. Many buildings are made from balsa wood, meticulously detailed with pencil and paint. After 21 years of hard work, Macken completed the model in 2025, and it is now available for long-term viewing at the museum. Visitors are encouraged to explore the model and use binoculars to spot familiar landmarks and neighborhoods.

In addition to Macken's work, art enthusiasts may appreciate the Panorama of the City of New York, located at the Queens Museum. This impressive model was completed in 1964, requiring a team of over 100 individuals three years to finish.

The dedication and craftsmanship displayed in Macken's model not only celebrate the iconic skyline of New York City but also inspire future generations of artists and architects to explore their creativity through innovative projects. This remarkable endeavor exemplifies how passion and perseverance can lead to extraordinary artistic achievements.
