A rapid start for a new AI model
Jev reached 35% of paid teams using Vercel's AI Gateway within two weeks of its limited September 15 release, according to Vercel. The company says that makes it the fastest-adopted model on its platform over a comparable launch period. Its usage was nearly twice that of the next most popular model, Sonnet 5.5.
Developed by Typesafe AI, Jev is designed to select among a small set of predefined outputs. That focused approach can make it faster and less costly than broader models for tasks such as sorting large volumes of data. Vercel says it has used Jev for command classification.
The figures reflect activity on Vercel's AI Gateway, not the entire AI market. Providers with their own APIs may be less visible in the data. The report also found that open-source models accounted for more than 70% of tokens processed through the gateway and nearly a quarter of its total spending. Meanwhile, spending on leading AI labs grew tenfold, despite making up a smaller share of overall spend.
The trends suggest that specialized, open-source and frontier models may serve different needs. As adoption grows, a more varied mix of AI tools could shape how organizations build and deploy software.
