American artist James Turrell has reached a major milestone with the opening of his 100th Skyscape, now permanently installed at ARoS in Aarhus, Denmark.
Titled As Seen Below, the work continues Turrell's celebrated series of site-specific environments that frame the sky through architecture. The new installation rises more than 50 feet high and spans roughly 130 feet across, creating a vast dome with an oculus directed upward.
Visitors experience the space in two distinct ways: in its open form, the dome presents an unfiltered view of the sky; in its color-shifted mode, the opening closes and the interior is transformed by immersive light tones that reshape perception and atmosphere.
Since the first Skyscape, Turrell's approach has expanded across 26 countries, turning light, space, and observation into a shared artistic language. The Aarhus installation adds a new landmark to that global journey, blending architecture and perception in a way that invites slow looking and reflection.
