Itamar Gov's "The Rhinoceros in the Room" Blends History and Art

The phrase "the elephant in the room" typically refers to an obvious issue that everyone avoids discussing. However, artist Itamar Gov introduces a new perspective with his captivating installation, "The Rhinoceros in the Room." This large inflatable sculpture occupies the nave of a medieval church at Kunstmuseum Magdeburg, Germany, transforming the space with its imposing presence.

Gov draws inspiration from Albrecht Dürer's famous rhinoceros woodcut, created in 1515 without the artist ever having seen the animal. Dürer's rendition, while anatomically incorrect--featuring an extra horn and an armored appearance--sparked public fascination and became a symbol of imperial power.

The rhinoceros represents strength and vitality, famously gifted from Sultan Muzafar II of Gujarat to King Manuel I of Portugal in the same year Dürer created his artwork. Today, the rhinoceros faces threats from poaching, with several species nearing extinction. In "The Rhinoceros in the Room," Gov intertwines historical narratives, philosophical concepts, and local folklore, challenging the thin line between reality and imagination, as well as memory and creativity.

Portrayed in a monochromatic gray, this gentle giant looms among the 11th-century Romanesque columns, evoking a sense of both absurdity and wonder. Its sheer size and unusual placement invite curiosity while symbolizing resilience and power.

"The Rhinoceros in the Room" is available for viewing until July 5, offering an engaging experience that encourages reflection on the past and present.
