Instagram is introducing First Draft, a new Reels editing feature designed to speed up the creative process inside the app. The tool automatically trims selected clips, removes pauses, and assembles a polished initial cut in under 10 seconds.
With this approach, creators can skip much of the manual cleanup that usually comes with short-form video editing. Instead of building a Reel from scratch, users start with an auto-generated draft and then fine-tune the pacing, sequence, and final look.
First Draft is launching first on iPhone. It can be accessed through Instagram's camera while recording or from the Reels gallery after choosing multiple clips.
The feature joins a growing set of creator tools Instagram has added this year, including options for replacing audio on existing posts and new AI-powered editing plans for its Edits app. The platform is also testing Series, a format that groups related Reels into a more structured viewing flow.
While automated cut tools already exist in other apps, Instagram's advantage is integration: creators can stay within one ecosystem from capture to publish. That could make short-form storytelling faster, smoother, and more accessible for a wider range of users. In the future, built-in editing automation may help redefine how everyday creators shape video on social platforms.
