Prosecutors are examining the timeline of Meta's rollout of tools like a nudity filter for private messages, which was introduced in April 2024, despite the company acknowledging the need for such measures nearly six years earlier.
During a deposition, Instagram's head, Adam Mosseri, discussed an email exchange from August 2018 with Meta's Chief Information Security Officer, Guy Rosen. In this correspondence, Mosseri highlighted the potential dangers of private messaging on Instagram, including the transmission of inappropriate content. The plaintiff's attorney pointed out that such risks were well-known yet not addressed promptly.
Meta has yet to provide a public comment regarding these developments. Mosseri defended the company's approach, suggesting that the challenges of monitoring private messages are inherent to all messaging platforms. He emphasized the delicate balance Meta strives to maintain between user privacy and safety.
Recent statistics revealed during the testimony indicate that a significant portion of young users, specifically 19.2% of those aged 13 to 15, reported encountering unwanted nudity or sexual images on Instagram. Additionally, 8.4% of respondents in the same age group noted witnessing self-harm or threats of self-harm on the platform within a week of usage.
While the nudity filter represents just one of several enhancements made to Instagram's safety protocols for teens, the court's inquiry centers on the delay in its implementation rather than the current state of user safety.
Further questioning also delved into past communications, including a 2017 email from a Facebook intern who sought to identify "addicted" users and explore potential support mechanisms. This correspondence serves as evidence that Meta was aware of the risks associated with its platforms but took years to address them adequately.
The ongoing deposition is part of a broader series of lawsuits aimed at holding major tech companies accountable for their impact on youth. This particular case, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, alleges that social media platforms are fundamentally flawed due to their design, which encourages excessive screen time and addictive behavior among teens. Other defendants in similar lawsuits include Snap, TikTok, and YouTube.
As these legal proceedings unfold, they coincide with a growing movement toward implementing regulations that restrict social media usage among teenagers, both in the United States and internationally.
