Instagram Introduces Feature to Opt Out of Close Friends Lists

Instagram is developing a feature that allows users to opt out of others' Close Friends lists, enhancing user control and privacy on the platform.

Instagram Introduces Feature to Opt Out of Close Friends Lists

Instagram is currently working on a new feature that will enable users to remove themselves from the "Close Friends" lists of others, as confirmed by Meta to TechCrunch. This feature is still in its developmental phase and has not yet entered public testing.

The "Close Friends" functionality allows users to share Stories, Reels, and posts with a select group, rather than broadcasting to their entire follower base. Since its introduction in 2018, users have not had the option to exit someone else's Close Friends list.

This internal prototype was first identified by reverse engineer Alessandro Paluzzi, who specializes in uncovering unreleased features during their development stages.

A screenshot shared by Paluzzi suggests that users will receive a notification indicating that if they choose to leave a Close Friends list, they will no longer be able to view that person's exclusive content unless they are added back.

While some may feel slighted if friends decide to remove themselves from their Close Friends lists, this feature could be a positive addition for those who prefer not to be included in certain circles.

It's also notable that Snapchat, a key competitor of Instagram, already provides users with the ability to remove themselves from someone's private story, highlighting a similar functionality.

As with many internal prototypes, the timeline for a public release of this feature remains uncertain.

In addition to updates on Close Friends, Instagram is also exploring other innovative features. Earlier this week, Meta announced plans to test new subscription models that would offer users exclusive functionalities on Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp.

While specific details about the subscription features are yet to be revealed, it has been suggested that a premium Instagram subscription could allow users to create unlimited audience lists, track followers who don't follow back, and view Stories discreetly.

Meta aims to enhance user experience by providing access to special features and greater control over sharing, while maintaining free core functionalities. The company appears to be experimenting with various subscription models, each offering unique exclusive features.
