Benji Xavier never envisioned himself as a cookbook author nor did he anticipate shedding 100 pounds. However, his unexpected journey led him to amass a following of over four million on TikTok and one million on Instagram, where he shares his weight loss experience. "I was completely new to this," Xavier admits.
At 29, Xavier's weight was always inconsistent. He would try various trendy diets, lose significant weight, only to regain it--and then some. The turning point came during the pandemic when he realized he had reached a tipping point. "I was constantly eating and gaining weight," he reflects. It was in public that he recognized the need for change, feeling uncomfortable not just with his appearance but also with his overall well-being. After hitting a peak weight of 286 pounds, he knew he had to take action.
Initially, his goal was simply to learn how to cook and adopt healthier eating habits. "This shift in mindset was transformative," he explains. He began sharing beginner-friendly healthy recipes on TikTok, where he previously entertained followers with comedic sketches. This marked the first time he revealed personal insights about his life.
"To my surprise, it took off," he shares. As he lost weight, his follower count soared. Eventually, he published his first cookbook, The Rebel Diet, set to release in 2024. In his upcoming second book, The Rebel Diet Meal Prep Cookbook, launching on June 2, 2026, he discusses how meal prepping has been crucial for maintaining his weight loss.
"Meal prep is incredibly effective for weight loss as it simplifies healthy eating," Xavier states. "You don't have to think about it; the meals are ready for you."
Here are some key lessons Xavier learned along the way:
Stop Restricting Yourself
Before his transformation, Xavier often ate out and chose whatever was available. As he learned to cook, he created healthier versions of his favorite meals, allowing him to enter a calorie deficit without feeling deprived. "I realized I could lose weight without strict restrictions," he notes, emphasizing that his previous dieting experiences felt limiting.
His new cookbook continues this philosophy, featuring meal prep plans that include healthier takes on popular fast food items.
Prepare, But Don't Overprepare
Initially, meal prepping felt overwhelming for Xavier, as he attempted to plan every meal for an entire week. "That approach didn't suit my lifestyle," he admits. Instead, he focused on simple recipes that required minimal time and effort, such as protein-rich pasta. "I typically prep for four days at a time to keep things fresh," he adds.
Consistency is key. On busy days, he combines frozen mashed cauliflower with rotisserie chicken for a quick meal.
Create a Shopping List and Stick to It
Once Xavier mastered meal prepping, he discovered it also saved him money. "There's a misconception that eating healthy is expensive," he explains. "Meal prepping allows you to buy ingredients in bulk, making it more budget-friendly."
He emphasizes the importance of adhering to a shopping list and visiting the grocery store regularly to avoid wasting food.
The Bottom Line
"Weight loss is a gradual process; it doesn't happen overnight," Xavier advises. His journey took about a year, requiring daily commitment and consistency. "Meal prep is a valuable tool that significantly aided my progress."
"Don't expect immediate results," he cautions. "Setting smaller, achievable goals can lead to substantial victories over time." With careful planning and dedication, those small steps can lead to remarkable transformations.
