THE AIM WAS always to foster connections. Back in 2019, I was engaged in a conversation with a trainer who sought advice on how to elevate his career.
This inquiry resonated with me as I had encountered similar questions from various trainers, particularly those from underrepresented communities. It struck me that Men's Health could serve as a vital link.
Months later, with the guidance of editor-in-chief Rich Dorment, we established the Strength in Diversity initiative. Its purpose is to assist trainers from marginalized backgrounds in enhancing their brands and accelerating their fitness careers.
Now celebrating its sixth year, this program has successfully supported 53 trainers. Our collaboration with the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), along with Women's Health over the past four years, has enabled us to identify, mentor, and develop eight to ten trainers from diverse backgrounds annually. These trainers benefit from a series of live Zoom clinics over three months, in addition to receiving free certifications from NSCA.
All participants have gone on to make significant contributions to MH and WH as fitness models, video stars, and emerging experts. If you look closely, you'll find alumni of the program featured throughout the MH website and social media platforms. Each connection I've made with the SID community has been filled with inspiring moments. For instance, when Joe Seeley (Class of 2023) traveled 90 minutes from NYC to Larchmont, New York, for a late-night workout with me last June, he dedicated an additional hour to refine his on-camera skills.
Other memorable instances include Jaimar Brown (2022) reaching out at 10 p.m. for writing advice, or Sunny Choi (2025), who passed her C.S.C.S. exam just a month after our sessions began, proving that with a solid plan, one can balance studying, work, and training.
Observing SID trainers excel in their pursuits often prompts me to reflect on my own journey. I recall significant moments, such as my first photo shoot with Peloton's Andy Speer in 2017 and my initial cover story featuring Patrick Mahomes during the pandemic. Remembering the effort I invested drives me to commit to the next chapter of my career.
This unique interplay of genuine connections allows us to inspire one another. While these connections can start through screens, their true impact is felt in real life.
