Infosys, a leading player in the Indian IT sector, has announced a collaboration with Anthropic to develop sophisticated AI agents tailored for enterprise use. This partnership comes at a pivotal time as automation, fueled by large language models, transforms the landscape of global IT services.
Through this alliance, Infosys aims to incorporate Anthropic's Claude models into its Topaz AI platform, facilitating the creation of "agentic" systems. These innovative agents are designed to autonomously manage intricate workflows across various sectors, including banking, telecommunications, and manufacturing. The announcement took place during the AI Impact Summit held in New Delhi, where industry leaders gathered to discuss advancements in AI technology.
This collaboration emerges amidst concerns about the potential disruption that AI tools, particularly those developed by prominent firms like Anthropic and OpenAI, might pose to India's robust $280 billion IT services sector, which heavily relies on human labor. Recently, shares of Indian IT companies experienced a significant decline following the launch of Anthropic's suite of enterprise AI tools, which promise to automate tasks in legal, sales, marketing, and research domains.
The partnership will enable Infosys to access Anthropic's Claude models and development tools, which are essential for crafting AI agents suited for large enterprises. Infosys intends to leverage Claude Code for coding, testing, and debugging, and has already begun utilizing the tool internally to enhance its expertise for client projects.
Infosys also highlighted the impact of AI on its business, reporting that AI-related services generated approximately ₹25 billion (around $275 million), accounting for 5.5% of the company's total revenue of ₹454.8 billion (about $5 billion) in the last quarter. In comparison, Tata Consultancy Services has indicated that its AI services yield around $1.8 billion annually, representing roughly 6% of its revenue.
For Anthropic, this partnership presents an opportunity to penetrate heavily regulated sectors where implementing AI systems at scale necessitates industry-specific knowledge and governance capabilities. Dario Amodei, co-founder and CEO of Anthropic, emphasized the importance of bridging the gap between AI models that perform well in demonstrations and those that function effectively in regulated environments. He noted that Infosys' expertise in sectors like financial services and manufacturing is instrumental in achieving this goal.
Additionally, Anthropic has recently established its first office in Bengaluru, India, as part of its strategy to expand into this growing market, which now ranks as its second-largest globally. The company reported that India accounts for about 6% of global Claude usage, with a significant focus on programming.
While Infosys has not disclosed specific timelines for the deployment of Claude-powered AI agents or the financial aspects of the partnership, this initiative aligns with similar endeavors by Indian IT firms, such as HCLTech's collaboration with OpenAI to enhance AI adoption across enterprises.
