India Reaches 100 Million Weekly Active ChatGPT Users, Says Sam Altman

India has reached 100 million weekly active ChatGPT users, marking a significant milestone for OpenAI and highlighting the country's growing influence in AI technology.

According to OpenAI's CEO Sam Altman, India has achieved a remarkable milestone with 100 million weekly active users of ChatGPT, establishing itself as one of the largest markets for OpenAI globally. This announcement comes just before a government-hosted AI summit.

In a recent article featured in the Times of India, Altman highlighted the increasing adoption of ChatGPT in India. OpenAI is set to participate in the five-day India AI Impact Summit in New Delhi, starting on Monday, alongside senior executives from leading AI firms.

This surge in user engagement is part of OpenAI's strategy to tap into India's youthful population and its vast internet user base. The company opened a new office in New Delhi in August 2025 and has tailored its offerings to suit the Indian market, including a cost-effective ChatGPT Go tier.

Altman noted that India ranks as ChatGPT's second-largest user base after the United States, reflecting the country's growing significance in OpenAI's global vision. The platform has seen a substantial increase in global usage, reaching 800 million weekly active users as of October 2025 and nearing 900 million.

Students play a crucial role in this growth, with India having the highest number of student users of ChatGPT worldwide. This demographic has become a focal point for AI companies, as they strive to integrate their technologies into educational settings.

As part of its commitment to accessibility, Altman emphasized India's potential to democratize AI, ensuring that the technology benefits a wider audience. He also indicated that OpenAI plans to enhance its collaboration with the Indian government to broaden access to AI tools across the nation.

The upcoming India AI Impact Summit is anticipated to attract a diverse range of global leaders in technology and politics, underscoring India's ambition to be a key player in the international AI landscape.
