How to Completely Remove Microsoft Copilot from Windows 11

Discover how to completely remove Microsoft Copilot from Windows 11 with two effective methods, ensuring a personalized user experience without unwanted AI features.

While the integration of AI services can be beneficial, many users find it overwhelming when such features are imposed without their consent. A notable example is Microsoft Copilot, which has been incorporated into Windows 11 without prior user approval. When I purchased my Windows 11 license, Copilot was absent, yet it later appeared alongside various AI functionalities.

In response to user feedback, Microsoft has begun to retract some of these features, acknowledging the concerns of its users. The company is actively removing "unnecessary" Copilot elements from the operating system, marking a positive shift. However, for those seeking a complete exit from these AI integrations, there are two effective methods to eliminate Copilot from your system based on your operating system version:

Disabling Copilot via Group Policy Editor

With the April 2026 Windows update, Microsoft introduced a way to disable Copilot through the Group Policy Editor. This option is accessible to users with Windows 11 Pro or higher, provided they haven't manually installed the Copilot app. If you haven't used Copilot in the last 28 days, you may see this option. To check:

Press Win-R, type "gpedit.msc," and hit Enter to launch the Group Policy Editor. Navigate to Local Computer Policy > User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows AI. Find the option labeled Remove Microsoft Copilot App, double-click it, and set it to Enabled. Click OK, and Copilot will be removed from your system.

Alternatively, if you wish to keep the app but disable it, navigate to Local Computer Policy > User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Copilot. Double-click Turn off Windows Copilot, set it to Enabled, and click OK to finish.

Using a Third-Party Script to Eliminate AI Services

If the Group Policy options are unavailable, a third-party script can be utilized to remove Copilot and all other AI features from Windows. Visit the GitHub repository for RemoveWindowsAI and follow the instructions to copy the command. Open PowerShell, paste the command, and execute it. This script allows you to select which AI services to disable, including Copilot.

This method is compatible with any Windows 11 version, although some antivirus software may mistakenly flag the script as malicious. Always proceed with caution when executing scripts from the internet, but you can review the script's documentation on GitHub for more details.
