After leaving the Marine Corps, Bran Hughes found that the training habits that once kept him in peak condition no longer matched his new routine. Living in Washington, DC and working for the US Department of Veteran Affairs, the 36-year-old noticed his body changing as his activity level dropped and his metabolism slowed.
His turning point came when he decided to seek structure again, joining Ultimate Performance and working with trainer Harrison Kim. Instead of pushing for more workouts, the program focused on fewer weekly sessions, sharper technique, and disciplined execution. Hughes says the shift from heavy, ego-driven lifting to controlled movement and proper form made the biggest difference.
A Smarter Approach to Training
The new plan centered on quality over quantity. Hughes learned that lifting with intention, slower tempos, and correct alignment could deliver stronger results than chasing maximum weight. That change helped him build consistency while reducing wasted effort in the gym.
Nutrition became just as important. He moved toward a whole-food routine, increased his protein intake to around 160 grams a day, and used meal tracking to stay accountable. He also began cutting back on alcohol, replacing some after-work drinks with walks and healthier habits that fit his lifestyle.
Visible Results, Renewed Confidence
In 19 weeks, Hughes went from 197 pounds and 27.24 percent body fat to 159.1 pounds and 11.27 percent body fat. He also returned to a size 32 pant, a clear sign of how much his routine had changed. Beyond the physical transformation, he says his energy, posture, and confidence improved in everyday life.
His wife later joined the same training environment, turning fitness into a shared routine built around movement, sleep, nutrition, and daily steps. Hughes now plans to run the Marine Corps Marathon and take on more climbing goals, including Mount Washington. His experience shows how disciplined habits can reshape performance, mindset, and long-term wellbeing, offering a blueprint for future wellness journeys.
