Harmony Korine Explores New Realms and Emotional Depths in AI

Harmony Korine discusses his artistic evolution and the transformative potential of AI in a recent interview, emphasizing creativity over technology.

In a recent discussion with The Hollywood Reporter, filmmaker and multimedia artist Harmony Korine shared insights into his artistic journey, which spans various mediums including painting, poetry, music, and digital art. He is now diving deeply into the realm of artificial intelligence.

Speaking from his Miami-based creative studio, EDGLRD, which he established during the production of his 2023 film Aggro Dr1ft, Korine revealed that he has not engaged with traditional forms of media like books or films in years. His focus has shifted towards exploring "post-narrative, sensory, experimental forms of entertainment."

When asked about the potential of AI, Korine emphasized that we are only beginning to grasp its capabilities. He believes that AI could transcend mere realism, transforming into a tool for creating profound and experiential art. "It's about adapting it as a tool or a paintbrush," he stated.

Addressing critics of AI, Korine remarked, "I can't comprehend how anyone could be against something with such creative potential. What may not resonate today might be transformative in the future." He likened the current discourse on AI to past debates about the Internet, suggesting that it is becoming increasingly irrelevant.

While he doesn't wish to be the voice for AI, Korine pointed out that discussions surrounding technology should not overshadow the creative process. "If you start with technology, you risk skepticism; it's essential to prioritize creativity," he noted.

Korine concluded with a call to embrace the unknown in creativity, asking, "Is there a way to rediscover joy in creation? Are there uncharted sounds or images waiting to be found? My passion lies in the thrill of discovery and the potential for new creation."
