HackerRank launches Chakra, an AI interview agent that evaluates developers' problem-solving, technical judgment and ability to work effectively with AI tools.

HackerRank's Chakra Brings AI-Guided, Skills-First Developer Interviews

HackerRank has introduced Chakra, an AI-powered interview agent designed to make technical recruitment more practical, interactive and aligned with real workplace tasks.

Following a six-month beta period, Chakra is now available to HackerRank customers. During testing, the platform conducted more than 500,000 interviews, with organizations including Snowflake, Snorkel and Capgemini exploring the system.

From test results to problem-solving insight

Rather than measuring only whether a developer reaches the correct answer, Chakra evaluates the journey behind it. Candidates work on tasks within a realistic code repository while using an integrated AI assistant. The system can then ask context-based follow-up questions about technical choices, alternative approaches and changing requirements.

This format aims to assess capabilities that conventional coding tests can miss, including critical thinking, judgment and AI fluency. In this context, AI fluency means understanding how to frame prompts, assess generated output and guide AI tools toward useful solutions.

HackerRank says the approach can consolidate several traditional stages--such as an initial screening, take-home assignment and technical follow-up--into one structured interview experience. The goal is to give hiring teams a broader view of how candidates approach real engineering work.

AI as a collaborative interview tool

Allowing candidates to use AI during an assessment reflects how software development is evolving. HackerRank reported that suspicious-activity flags were 70% to 80% lower in Chakra sessions than in comparable conventional assessments, suggesting that transparent access to AI may encourage more authentic workflows.

Chakra is intended to generate structured candidate scores rather than make final recruitment decisions. Hiring teams remain responsible for decisions, while the platform supports a consistent evaluation framework and frees interviewers to focus on team fit, communication and role-specific conversations.

With more than 3,000 business customers and a global developer community exceeding 30 million people, HackerRank is positioning Chakra as a next-generation alternative to output-focused technical testing. Human oversight, clear criteria and thoughtful implementation will remain central as AI becomes more present in talent evaluation.

As AI becomes a standard part of professional creation, interview systems like Chakra could help shift recruitment toward a fuller understanding of how people think, collaborate and build solutions.
