Gumloop Secures $50M from Benchmark to Empower Employees as AI Agent Creators

In mid-2023, Max Brodeur-Urbas co-founded Gumloop with a vision to enable non-technical employees to automate mundane tasks using artificial intelligence. Initially, the AI agent concept was largely experimental and fraught with challenges.

As AI technology has progressed, Gumloop has refined its offerings significantly.

The company now empowers teams at organizations such as Shopify, Ramp, Gusto, Samsara, Instacart, and Opendoor to deploy dependable AI agents capable of managing intricate, multi-step tasks without the need for engineering expertise.

Employees can share the agents they create with their peers, fostering a culture of automation within the organization. "They become engaged, they start creating more agents, and soon enough, the entire company embraces AI," Brodeur-Urbas shared with TechCrunch.

As businesses race to integrate AI, Benchmark general partner Everett Randell believes that the key to success lies in equipping every employee with AI capabilities. Gumloop's user-friendly agent-builder exemplifies the tools that can unlock this potential.

This belief prompted Randell, who joined Benchmark last October from Kleiner Perkins, to spearhead a $50 million Series B funding round for Gumloop. This investment, his first at Benchmark, also saw contributions from Nexus VP, First Round Capital, Y Combinator, Box Group, The Cannon Project, and Shopify.

Although Gumloop wasn't actively seeking investment, the startup recognized this year as an opportune moment to accelerate its growth. For Brodeur-Urbas, collaborating with Benchmark--known for backing giants like eBay, Uber, and Dropbox--was an obvious choice.

While initially aiming to create a small, billion-dollar venture, Brodeur-Urbas has been compelled by increasing demand from enterprise clients to build a dedicated sales team and expand his engineering workforce.

Gumloop is not alone in its mission to transform knowledge workers into AI agent creators. It faces competition from established automation platforms like Zapier and n8n, as well as specialized agent builders such as Dust. Even leading AI labs are entering this space, with Anthropic's Claude Co-Work allowing users to create autonomous agents without coding.

However, Randell is confident that Gumloop stands out from its competitors. During his research, he found that at least one customer adopted Gumloop organically.

When Randell inquired with a CTO about their choice of Gumloop, the response was revealing. The company had provided employees with access to Gumloop alongside two competitors. Six months later, the results were evident: staff were actively using Gumloop while the alternatives remained largely untouched.

Randell attributes Gumloop's rapid adoption to its minimal learning curve. "You can start creating agents and automations right away," he noted.

While many AI startups fear that foundational models could render them obsolete, Randell believes Gumloop's model-agnostic approach will continue to attract clients. As AI models evolve, Gumloop allows users to select the most effective model for specific tasks.

This flexibility is also cost-effective; many enterprises hold credits for OpenAI, Gemini, and Anthropic, and they wish to utilize all available options.

Randell's enthusiasm for Gumloop ultimately stems from the vast potential in the enterprise automation sector. "Enterprise automation is a significant opportunity," he stated. "I believe it represents the largest category within enterprise AI."
