Guggenheim Abu Dhabi is set to open on December 11 on Saadiyat Island, marking a major milestone for the emirate's expanding cultural landscape. The announcement was made by the Department of Culture and Tourism-Abu Dhabi.
First unveiled in 2006 and designed by the late architect Frank Gehry, the museum will become the newest member of the Guggenheim network, joining institutions in New York, Venice, and Bilbao. Its location places it near other landmark cultural venues on Saadiyat Island, including Louvre Abu Dhabi and the Zayed National Museum.
The museum includes 30 galleries connected by a central atrium, with 11,600 square meters of indoor exhibition space and 23,000 square meters outdoors. Its collection will focus on modern and contemporary art from West Asia, North Africa, and South Asia, with displays organized by themes such as geography, language, and artistic movement.
According to the Department of Culture and Tourism-Abu Dhabi, the project is designed to support learning, creativity, and cultural exchange. Guggenheim Abu Dhabi also reflects the region's broader investment in museums and international cultural programming.
As the opening approaches, the museum is positioned to strengthen Abu Dhabi's role as a global destination for art and ideas, shaping how future audiences experience contemporary culture.
