Guadalupe Maravilla to Transform St. John the Divine into a Space for Art and Connection

Artist Guadalupe Maravilla will present a major new installation at New York's Cathedral of St. John the Divine, turning the Synod Hall into an immersive environment for reflection, gathering and creative exchange.

Commissioned by Creative Time in collaboration with the Clemente Soto Vélez Cultural and Educational Center, Consejos de las Estrellas will be open from December 16, 2026, through February 7, 2027.

An installation designed as a shared sanctuary

The project brings together around 100 sculptures and textile works, alongside Maravilla's traveling school-bus artwork, Mariposa Relámpago. The installation expands the artist's multidisciplinary practice, which combines sculpture, sound and community-focused experiences.

During the exhibition, Maravilla will host weekly sound bath sessions, inviting visitors to experience the space through listening, stillness and collective participation. The program positions art not only as something to observe, but also as an environment that can encourage connection and personal reflection.

The cathedral will also host a community donation initiative, collecting food, clothing and toys for redistribution through partnerships with local organizations. This element extends the project beyond the exhibition format and reinforces its focus on shared support.

Set within one of New York's most significant cultural and spiritual landmarks, Consejos de las Estrellas reflects a growing interest in public art that creates meaningful spaces for participation. The project points toward a future in which cultural institutions increasingly connect artistic innovation with community care.
