Google lets users toggle visible watermarks on AI-generated media

Google is adding a visible watermark toggle for AI-generated images, videos, and music, while keeping invisible SynthID and C2PA metadata for transparency.

Google lets users toggle visible watermarks on AI-generated media

Google is giving users more control over how its AI-generated content appears by adding an option to turn off the visible watermark on outputs from its models. The change applies to images, videos, and music created with Gemini tools.

According to Josh Woodward, Google's VP for Gemini, the setting will be available for Nano Banana, Omni, and Lyria. Users will be able to manage the feature in Gemini and in Google's video editor, Flow, while support in Search is expected soon.

The update does not remove Google's invisible safeguards. SynthID and C2PA-based metadata will remain in place, allowing AI-generated content to be identified even when the visible mark is disabled. Google says the goal is to balance creative flexibility with transparency.

The new control will roll out in the coming days through Settings > Media Watermark. In parallel, Google is open-sourcing Credentio, a library designed to help developers add local validation for content credentials in their own apps.

The move reflects a broader shift in AI media design, where usability, attribution, and trust are being shaped together. It may help define a more flexible standard for how AI content is created, shared, and verified in the future.
