In an exciting development for photography enthusiasts, Google has integrated a full camera feature into its popular photo editing app, Snapseed, which it acquired in 2012. This latest update, version 3.15.0 for iOS, is set to elevate the app's status, potentially surpassing Apple's native Camera app.
Exploring Snapseed's Camera Feature on iPhone
Upon updating Snapseed, users will notice a new camera icon in the top right corner. This allows users not only to edit existing images but also to capture new photos directly within the app.
For those wanting quick access to the camera, it can be added to the iPhone's Lock Screen. Simply press and hold the display when locked, tap "Customize," select a shortcut spot, and choose "Camera" under Snapseed. Alternatively, a Control Center shortcut is also available.
After granting Snapseed access to the camera, users can select from various classic film presets to enhance their shots. The app offers 11 different film simulations, inspired by brands like Kodak and Fuji, each providing unique variations in color, contrast, and texture. Users can easily switch between these presets via a dedicated selector in the camera interface.
Additionally, users can save their custom looks and edits as preset filters for future captures. In the main editing interface, adjustments can be saved and accessed through the camera for seamless editing.
One of Snapseed's standout features is the Pro toggle switch located in the top left corner, offering advanced controls like ISO, shutter speed, and focus--options that the standard iPhone camera lacks. Users can modify these settings using an intuitive dial, along with controls for flash and zoom. The interface also includes buttons for switching the camera view and accessing the photo library.
Flexibility is key with Snapseed; all adjustments made through film presets can be altered later. Users can revisit their images in the main library and utilize the Faves and Tools tabs for further modifications. Editing is made simple with adjustable sliders for filters and effects, along with an undo option for easy corrections.
This innovative addition to Snapseed enhances the selection of third-party camera applications available for iPhone users, providing a compelling alternative to Apple's default options. However, Android users may feel disappointed as the Android version of Snapseed has not received updates since May 2024, missing out on these exciting new features.
