Google has announced the Fitbit Edge, a screen-equipped fitness tracker that combines a slim band design with features aimed at everyday activity and outdoor workouts. The device is priced at $179.99, with pre-orders open and shipping expected to begin October 27.
GPS, altimeter and up to a week of battery life
The Edge has built-in GPS, so it can track routes without relying on a connected phone, and an altimeter for measuring elevation. It also adds a physical side button and a replaceable battery. Google says it can run for up to seven days per charge, or around two days with the always-on display enabled.
Music controls work with audio playing on a phone, while the tracker uses the same charger as the Fitbit Air. Unlike the Charge 6, however, the Edge does not include NFC, so contactless payments are not available.
Google says users will be able to connect both a Fitbit Edge and a Fitbit Air to the same phone and switch between them. With its mix of standalone tracking and compact design, the Edge adds another option to Google's wearable lineup and may give users more flexibility in how they track their daily activity.
