The recent integration of Gemini into Google Maps' navigation feature, widely available now on both Android and iOS, brings a new level of AI assistance for travelers. When users activate the voice command "hey Google," they will engage with Gemini instead of the traditional Google Assistant, offering a more interactive and conversational navigation experience.
During a recent test drive with the updated Android app and Android Auto, I explored Gemini's capabilities as a travel companion. The AI not only manages standard navigation tasks but also answers questions, retrieves information, and performs various functions akin to its standalone app.
Navigating with Gemini
Gemini proved to be a reliable tool for reaching destinations efficiently. Every request I made--whether for finding locations or navigating to them--was handled quickly and accurately. Voice commands allowed for easy adjustments to routes or the addition of stops along the way.
Commands such as "what time will I arrive?" or "how's the traffic?" were executed seamlessly. Users can also inquire about weather conditions or review ratings for their intended locations. Switching destinations through voice commands was notably simpler than manually tapping on the Android Auto screen.
However, I encountered a minor challenge when attempting to return to the main navigation view after exploring stop options. Gemini struggled to interpret "go back to the navigation view," necessitating a command to "clear the search results" instead. Additionally, clarity in speech was essential for accurate understanding, and there were occasional misinterpretations of place names. Nevertheless, Gemini showed contextual awareness, allowing me to refer to a location by a simpler name after the initial mention.
While the AI's effectiveness is somewhat limited by the data available, it still offered proactive assistance by regularly checking if I needed anything further and encouraging me to enjoy my drive.
Beyond Directions
The Gemini experience extends beyond navigation, enabling users to ask about diverse topics, from entertainment to current events. While it occasionally produced inaccuracies, such as mischaracterizing the Galaxy S26, it generally provided relevant information about road regulations and signage while reminding me to focus on driving.
Gemini can also play music, accessing platforms like YouTube Music and Spotify, although it occasionally required repeated commands for certain tasks. Moreover, the ability to check emails and respond to messages without diverting attention from the road was a particularly valuable feature.
Despite a few minor bugs, Gemini's performance in Google Maps was impressive, showcasing the potential of AI in enhancing travel experiences. This transition from Google Assistant to Gemini marks a significant step forward, promising a more intuitive and helpful navigation journey for users in the future.
