Google Extends Deadline for Migrating Fitbit Accounts to Google Accounts

Google has extended the deadline for migrating Fitbit accounts to Google accounts until May 19, 2026, offering users more time to transition seamlessly.

Since acquiring Fitbit in 2021, Google has mandated that all users eventually link their devices to a Google account to maintain access to Fitbit's features and services. Initially, the deadline for this migration was set for 2025, but it was later postponed to February 2, 2026. Recently, Google has announced another extension.

If you are still using a legacy Fitbit account created before 2021, you now have until May 19, 2026, to transition your account to a Google account.

Steps to Transition to a Google Account

For those who have yet to make the switch, the migration process is simple and typically takes just a few minutes. Google offers clear instructions on the Fitbit support page to guide users through linking their existing data to a Google account.

To migrate your Fitbit account, follow these steps:

  1. Launch the Fitbit app.

  2. Log into your Fitbit account.

  3. Select Settings and tap on Move account.

  4. Follow the prompts on your screen.

During the migration, you will have the opportunity to review and modify your Fitbit data and settings. After completing the transition, you can manage your Fitbit information from both your Google Account settings and the Fitbit app. If you change your mind, you can cancel the process until the final confirmation. Remember, you have until May 19, 2026, to finalize this transition.

It is important to note that users who have created new Fitbit accounts or purchased devices in the last two years are already utilizing the Google-based system. The migration is primarily aimed at those with older accounts established before the acquisition.

Implications for Users

This development has not been universally welcomed, as many long-time Fitbit users are hesitant to link their health data with Google's ecosystem.

For those who opt not to migrate, Google has set July 15, 2026, as the deadline to either download or delete their Fitbit account along with all associated health data. If you decide to leave the platform completely, deleting your data is the best option for ensuring privacy and security.

There are also migration challenges, particularly for younger Fitbit users. Reports have emerged that Supervised Google accounts, intended for children and teenagers, may face difficulties logging into the Fitbit app, posing a challenge for families who purchased devices for their kids.

Despite the extensions and concerns raised, Google's commitment to integrating Fitbit into its ecosystem is clear. Whether you choose to adapt to this change or part ways with your tracker, the time to decide is limited.
