Google has announced its biggest clean energy purchase so far: a large-scale solar and battery storage project in Arkansas that will help supply electricity to the grid and support the company's data center operations.
The first two phases of the Steel River Energy Center are expected to deliver enough power to cover about 6% of Arkansas's peak electricity demand. Google is investing in the project with developer Cypress Creek Energy and will buy the full output from these initial phases.
In total, the early stages add 1 gigawatt of solar capacity and 1.9 gigawatt-hours of battery storage. Once all three phases are complete, the facility is projected to become the largest solar installation in the United States, with around 1.8 gigawatts of solar and 2.9 gigawatt-hours of storage.
The site, located about 30 miles north of Memphis, Tennessee, is designed to send power directly into the grid while pairing daytime solar generation with batteries that can extend supply across the full day. Google says this approach supports its goal of matching electricity use with clean power on an hourly basis.
The project's third phase is scheduled to connect in 2029, and Cypress Creek has already secured $3.5 billion in financing for the first two stages. The scale and speed of the buildout highlight how solar-plus-storage systems are becoming a central model for modern energy infrastructure.
As more companies look for flexible, low-carbon power solutions, projects like Steel River may help shape a faster, cleaner, and more resilient energy future.
