Smartphones have become prime targets for theft. When a device is stolen, it can lead to unauthorized access to a wealth of personal information. Therefore, robust security measures are essential to safeguard sensitive data, even if the device is no longer in your possession. Google has integrated various anti-theft functionalities into Android, aptly named "Theft Protection Features." While no entirely new features were unveiled, the company announced significant updates to existing ones through a recent post on its Security Blog.
Updated Theft Protection Features for Android
To begin with, Google introduced enhancements to authentication measures applicable to all devices operating on Android 16 or later. A new toggle in the settings allows users to enable or disable the Failed Authentication Lock, which secures the screen after multiple incorrect password attempts. This feature can now be managed directly from the settings menu.
Moreover, Google has extended the lockout duration following repeated passcode failures, thereby minimizing the risk of unauthorized access. Interestingly, the company has incorporated safeguards for children attempting to guess passwords, as identical attempts do not count against the retry limit. Additionally, since late 2025, all applications utilizing the Android Biometric Prompt have been compatible with Identity Check, ensuring that only authorized users can modify sensitive settings through successful biometric verification.
Enhancements have also been made to features available for devices running at least Android 10. One of the updates pertains to Remote Lock, which enables users to secure their devices from a web browser in case of theft or loss. A new security question can be added to the unlocking process, requiring knowledge of the answer in addition to the credentials for access. For added security, users are advised to choose nonsensical answers to their security questions.
In Brazil, users benefit from two new security settings enabled by default. The Theft Detection Lock can identify when a device has been forcibly taken, while the Remote Lock feature simplifies the process of securing the device without prior setup.
While these updates may not be groundbreaking, they represent a step forward in enhancing the security of Android devices and preventing unauthorized access.
