Gaza's Basement Gym Turns Training Into a Daily Ritual

Inside Khan Younis, Champions Factory gym keeps training alive with affordable memberships, community spirit, and a focus on resilience through sport.

Gaza's Basement Gym Turns Training Into a Daily Ritual

In Khan Younis, Gaza, a basement gym known as Champions Factory has become a rare space where training, routine, and community still hold steady. Reached through a damaged building and opened only in daylight because of limited power, the gym continues to welcome members despite its unfinished setting.

Owned by coach Mohamed Ziad al-Biss, the space brings together plumbers, tailors, electricians, and other local workers who see exercise as both physical preparation and mental relief. The facility charges a modest monthly fee, making it accessible to many residents who want to keep moving.

Several members say they returned to bodybuilding and strength training after long interruptions, while others discovered the gym more recently. Their schedules are shaped by work, family duties, and changing daily conditions, yet they still carve out time for lifting, cardio, and functional training. For many, the gym is less about competition and more about consistency, focus, and resilience.

Al-Biss, who has competed at the Gaza Strip level and continues to prepare for future international events, says the demand for gyms in Khan Younis is growing. He hopes support will help restore the facility further and expand what it can offer to young athletes and everyday trainees alike.

The story of Champions Factory shows how sport can become a practical source of structure, motivation, and shared purpose. In the future, spaces like this may play an even larger role in rebuilding community life through movement, discipline, and hope.
