Fusion energy companies are broadening their strategy as they pursue commercial power, with several now strengthening ties to the defense sector. The shift reflects both the high cost of fusion development and the growing value of advanced energy systems for security-related applications.
One of the clearest examples is Xcimer, a Denver-based startup focused on laser-driven fusion. The company recently announced a partnership and investment from RTX, giving the defense and aerospace group access to Xcimer's high-powered laser technology while providing the startup with additional funding through RTX Ventures.
Xcimer says it operates the world's largest privately owned laser system, called Phoenix, which is being developed as part of its path toward a fusion power plant. Although the system is still below full commercial scale, its performance has already drawn interest from defense innovators exploring new energy-based capabilities.
Another startup, Pacific Fusion, has also moved closer to the national security ecosystem. The company signed a memorandum of understanding with the National Nuclear Security Administration to collaborate on high-energy-density fusion experiments. Its new demonstration facility in New Mexico is designed to prove a key scientific milestone: producing more energy than the system consumes.
According to Pacific Fusion leaders, the same facility may also support advanced defense research because of the intensity of the fusion reactions it can produce. That overlap highlights how fusion platforms can serve more than one frontier at once, connecting clean energy ambitions with high-precision scientific applications.
As investment patterns evolve, fusion startups are finding that defense partnerships can offer both technical relevance and financial momentum. This convergence may help accelerate the next phase of fusion innovation and reshape how breakthrough energy systems are developed in the years ahead.
