French Artists Urge Boycott of Centre Pompidou's Seoul Museum Over Partner's Controversial Ties

A collective of prominent French artists has initiated a call for a boycott of the upcoming Centre Pompidou satellite museum in Seoul, scheduled to open on June 4. This initiative is a response to the museum's partnership with the Hanwha Foundation of Culture, which is linked to the Hanwha Group, a major South Korean conglomerate.

The controversy stems from Hanwha Group's previous collaborations with Israeli defense firms, including Elbit Systems, which is noted as Israel's largest defense contractor. Critics have raised concerns about the ethical implications of such partnerships, arguing that they could undermine the cultural integrity of the museum.

The Centre Pompidou Hanhwa, as it will be known, is positioned as a cultural bridge between South Korea and France. However, the Hanwha Foundation has attempted to mitigate criticism by asserting that its subsidiaries do not engage in activities that provoke international condemnation. In a statement to the press, they emphasized, "Neither Hanwha Aerospace nor Hanwha Systems are involved in any activities that would draw the condemnation of the international community."

The open letter, first published as an op-ed in Libération, accuses the museum of engaging in "art-washing," a term used to describe efforts to mask profits from conflict through cultural initiatives. The petition's signatories include notable figures such as Ali Cherri and Lili Reynaud-Dewar, both celebrated artists in the contemporary scene.

The artists argue that the partnership represents a moral compromise for cultural institutions, contributing to the normalization of violence and conflict. They are calling for a public mobilization against the partnership, urging fellow artists and cultural workers to join their cause.

In a related context, the Centre Pompidou Hanhwa recently hosted a Chanel runway show, attended by celebrities like Tilda Swinton and Marion Cotillard, highlighting the museum's cultural significance. However, the timing of the protest underscores the tensions surrounding its opening.

As the art world grapples with the implications of corporate sponsorships and their ethical dimensions, this situation invites a broader discussion on the responsibilities of cultural institutions. The outcome of this boycott could set a precedent for future collaborations between the arts and corporate entities, potentially reshaping the landscape of cultural partnerships.
