Flox Intelligence Uses On-Device AI to Keep Wildlife Clear of Transport Routes

Flox Intelligence is using on-device AI to identify wildlife and deliver adaptive, species-specific deterrents near railways, airports and roads, aiming to make infrastructure safer.

Flox Intelligence Uses On-Device AI to Keep Wildlife Clear of Transport Routes

Flox Intelligence is developing an AI-powered wildlife deterrent for areas where animals and human infrastructure overlap, including railway lines, airport boundaries and roads. The goal is to respond to wildlife without relying on a single loud or fixed deterrent.

Founded in 2020 as a spinout from Sweden's KTH Royal Institute of Technology, the company builds compact devices that process information on-site. When a motion sensor detects activity, a camera and on-device AI identify the nearby animal. The system then selects a sound intended to encourage that species to move away. It can vary its responses over time to reduce the chance that animals become accustomed to them.

Flox says about 150 devices are operating across North America, Europe and Australia, at locations including rail and road corridors, airports, parks and agricultural sites. A companion software platform helps customers monitor deployments and generate reports, including for biodiversity tracking.

The company is also working with equipment manufacturers to bring its technology onto vehicles. Train manufacturer Alstom is among its partners, while a longer-term ambition is to make the software adaptable to other machines that operate outdoors.

Flox is opening a $10 million Series A funding round, which it plans to use mainly to expand deployments and develop the system for broader applications. As more machines operate beyond controlled environments, adaptive AI could help them better account for the wildlife around them.
