The event brought attention to the security of large-scale public databases that support vehicle ownership, registration and identity processes. According to the agency's statement, access was obtained through credentials associated with a law enforcement officer that had been stored on a personal device.

The exposed files reportedly included numerous vehicle ownership certificates containing names, addresses and vehicle identification numbers. A more limited set of records may also have included sensitive identity details, such as Social Security numbers, passports and immigration documents.
