Florida is preparing a new mobility step by channeling nearly $200 million from a federal EV charging program into infrastructure for electric air taxis. Instead of expanding traditional charging stations, the state plans to support 32 landing pads equipped with charging systems for eVTOL aircraft.
The funding originally came through the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure program, created under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. State officials said the money remained unused because private investment has already expanded EV charging in the state. Under updated federal guidance, Florida now sees room to direct the funds toward publicly accessible transportation infrastructure.
The plan reflects growing interest in eVTOL aircraft, a sector still in its early stages but advancing quickly. These compact electric aircraft are designed to carry around four to five passengers and are being positioned as a future option for short urban trips.
Florida's transportation officials believe the concept could help ease congestion in high-traffic areas. Proposed locations for the landing pads include airports, golf courses, and luxury residential properties, signaling a vision that blends mobility, technology, and premium urban planning.
