The Museum at FIT will open Doll Dressing on September 16, 2026, inviting visitors to explore the long-running creative exchange between dolls and fashion. Running through January 3, 2027, the exhibition examines how miniature figures have shaped design, identity and visual culture across the 20th and 21st centuries.
Curated by Dr. Colleen Hill, senior curator of costume at The Museum at FIT, the presentation brings together more than 170 objects. Fashion dolls will be placed in dialogue with garments, accessories and artworks, revealing dolls as more than playthings: they have served as muses, design experiments and vehicles for storytelling. Works associated with names including Balenciaga, Comme des Garçons, Maison Martin Margiela, Marc Jacobs, Loewe, Louis Vuitton and Moschino highlight this ongoing creative relationship.
From miniature models to personal expression
Dolls have communicated fashion ideas for centuries. From the 14th century onward, miniature dressed figures circulated in Europe as three-dimensional carriers of emerging styles. In the modern era, their influence expanded beyond reflecting trends to actively inspiring them.
The exhibition approaches "doll dressing" as a broad visual language encompassing clothing, hair, makeup, accessories and gesture. Its six sections explore fashion dolls, miniature design, nostalgia, domestic spaces, the "living doll" concept and unconventional interpretations of doll-inspired style. Together, they consider how scale, fantasy and play can become tools for creative self-expression.
A public symposium on November 13, 2026, will bring scholars and designers together to discuss the exhibition's themes. By reframing dolls as cultural objects and fashion catalysts, Doll Dressing points to a future in which design continues to draw fresh ideas from imagination, memory and miniature worlds.
