The Biennale Certificate in Philosophy and Art is an innovative four-day program curated by the Institute for Doctoral Studies in the Visual Arts (IDSVA) and philosopher Giovanbattista Tusa. This advanced certificate is tailored for curators, artists, researchers, and cultural practitioners eager to delve into the dynamic environment of the Venice Biennale. Over the course of four days, participants will engage in a series of philosophical themes--Rooting, Growing, Branching, and Cultivating Futures--positioning art as a vital means of revealing the world and enacting meaningful change.
Program Structure
Day 1 -- Rooting
The journey begins with a philosophical exploration. Rather than merely questioning the role of art, participants will consider how art itself becomes conceivable. The Biennale is approached as a composite of situated propositions intertwined with narratives of exclusion, authority, and knowledge dynamics.
Day 2 -- Growing (with guest curator)
The second day shifts focus to knowledge and interpretation. Collaborating with a guest curator, the Biennale is revealed as an epistemic landscape where various truths coexist, clash, and evolve.
Day 3 -- Branching (self-study)
On the third day, participants explore the Biennale pavilions independently. Each pavilion is viewed as a temporal entity, encouraging attention to those moments where artworks transcend the immediate experience, hinting at what remains unseen or unarticulated.
Day 4 -- Cultivating Futures (with guest art theorist and/or artist)
The final day emphasizes futurity as a philosophical concept. A guided visit to a Venice pavilion with an artist or theorist serves as a platform for contemplating how art acts as a temporal gesture, impacting the present while connecting to uncharted futures.
Certification & Deliverables
Upon completing the comprehensive 25-hour program, including both guided sessions and self-study, and submitting a 1,000-word reflective statement, participants will earn an Advanced Certificate in Philosophy and Art.
Program Fee
The fee for this enriching experience is $1800, which covers tuition, a Biennale pass, and the certificate. Participants are responsible for their travel, accommodation, and stay in Venice.
