New insights regarding a forthcoming museum in AlUla, Saudi Arabia, have been disclosed by Arts AlUla, a venture of the Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU). The museum, designed by Lina Ghotmeh, represents a collaboration between the RCU and the renowned Centre Pompidou, with initial plans announced in 2023. This fresh information was highlighted by various media outlets.
Nestled within the AlUla Oasis, the museum is integral to RCU's initiative to enhance the historic Al-Ula region, which is home to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Hegra. Additional cultural projects in the area include Wadi AlFann, featuring permanent outdoor installations by artists such as Agnes Denes and James Turrell, the ongoing AlUla Arts Festival, and the vibrant AlJadidah Arts District, which boasts galleries, cafes, and workshops.
The latest update was shared during the launch of "Arduna," a contemporary art exhibition co-curated by teams from the future AlUla Contemporary Art Museum and the Centre Pompidou. This exhibition showcases over 80 artworks by both regional and international artists, offering a glimpse into the museum's envisioned direction.
According to Candida Pestana, the museum's inaugural director, "The three pillars for this institution--and for AlUla--are heritage, the environment and the landscape, and community." She emphasized the importance of artists collaborating with the local community to deepen their understanding of the land and its significance. The museum's collecting strategy will also focus on acquiring comprehensive works from individual artists.
As per their initial agreement, the Centre Pompidou will continue to support the AlUla Contemporary in areas such as publishing, curation, and research. However, the opening date for the museum has yet to be announced.
